This week, I finished the photo album scrapbook from our road trip to the Okanagan last year and I think it turned out pretty cute. I had fun cutting up all the stuff I brought home from the trip - maps, campsite info, music festival brochures, etc - to fit in the 4X6 slots. I added some pictures and some hand written journalling and it's done! Here are a few pages...
And now onto a project that has been tucked away for a long, long time. Four long years, in fact. It all started in October of 2003 when my dad sent me the Spirit of the Northwoods pattern book and a dandy little applique iron for my birthday. We had just moved to the Yukon and I was just back from my very first, very inspiring Silver City Quilt Retreat. I was so excited by this book! Of course I was still using that old machine of my grandmothers at the time, so I did not see any intricate applique quilt making in my future.
Fast forward to the spring retreat when my trusty old machine breaks and my quilting friends spend the remainder of the weekend convincing me that I needed a shiny new one. Finally! I thought. I can tackle that beautiful northern quilt.
It was May, so I started with the chickadee block. And then I did the next six months of blocks. All those triangles. All that applique to cut out. Did I mention the triangles? There are a total of 648 triangles in this quilt. That is far to many triangles for my taste. The blocks are huge, 20 inches. The quilt is gigantic.
To say I got a little overwhelmed is an understatement. So there the blocks sat in my quilting room, unfinished, for four long years.
And this summer, I've decided to finish it! The first step was digging through my fabric to find the right backgrounds for the other six squares.
And then the cutting began. Oh, there are so many triangles.
I suspect this one will take more than a week to finish. But I still hope to have some progress to post next week!
Oh, and I didn't forget about posting the pictures from the photography class. It's just that in one short week my pictures are no better than last week. In fact, as I try to move away from Program Mode and toward manual shooting, I'm ending up with a whole lot of black pictures. Go figure.
