It's true. Any trip south for me means leaving with a bag half empty and coming home with a bag with bulging seams. And this trip was no different. After almost four years in the Yukon and three years in Prince George, my shopping style during my trips south has changed, though. Now, I can get what I need in a few short hours. Before it would take days. This time, I spent about 4 hours shopping in total (between New York and Ottawa), and I came home with some goodies. Here are the highlights.
- Kates Paperie - this beautiful store filled with the most incredible papers, photo albums and cards. Janet and I had a field day in this store. Especially with the collage bags that were filled with lovely bits and pieces of paper.
- Anthropologie - another great New York find and Janet's favorite store. This place has a fun mix of funky clothes and house stuff. The amount of beautiful stuff in there was overwhelming. I came away with two shirts, a sweater and some cool hooks for the loft. With a bit more time I could have spent way, way more money at this place.
- Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel - I have only seen these stores online and wasn't expecting to be so overwhelmed in person! How do people live in cities with stores like this and not be totally broke? I would consider moving to the city just so I could shop here. And given my general dislike for shopping and for the city, this is saying a lot.
- Purl - another little gem in SoHo. With five minutes to spare before we needed to get to the subway so I could meet my shuttle to the airport, we ducked into this little yarn store. And I came out with this incredible wool, two sets of needles and a pattern for a childs poncho. Oh, did I mention I started knitting? There is just something cool about buying craft supplies in SoHo. I almost missed my shuttle because of this place. And we even considered visiting their quilt store next door too. But just for a split second.
- Rideau Centre - the token shopping mall of the trip. Hey, I spent all my time in New York at cool shops so when I was in Ottawa I needed to focus on the practical stuff. Like jeans and t-shirts. And a cute bag from American Eagle that says "Live Your Life".
- Michaels, The Arts and Crafts Store - is it ironic that I almost missed two flights on this trip because I spent just a tad too long in a craft store?
