It was early summer 2003 and Aubrey and I were living in Kentville, Nova Scotia. I was working as an intern at the Wildlife Division and Aubrey just graduated from COGS. We were ready to move onto the next step in our lives. One day we started talking about applying for jobs. We decided to each send out five job applications the first week, ten the next, twenty the next (and on and on). We would go to whatever place offered us the coolest job. We had obvious limitations. We were not going to Ontario. Or the city. And neither of us really had much interest in the prairies. Other than that, Canada was open.
So we started applying. And applying and applying. And then one day in late July Aubrey got a call from a Champagne Aishihik First Nations. They were looking for a GIS person. A few days later they had a phone interview. A few days after that they called and offered him the job. And we were moving 8,000 km away to the Yukon.
Today was Aubrey's last day at CAFN. After three and a half years he is ready to move on to another adventure. An email that one of his co-workers sent really struck a cord with both of us today "We thank Aubrey for his service to CAFN, for his work, his helpfulness, and the laughs. I'm sure he'll never forget who it was that brought him to God's country". Man, that is so true. We will never forget the people who brought us to this incredible place. The people who put their faith and trust into this crazy couple from the east who arrived with the UHaul. The people who made us feel so, so welcome. Thank you.
