We had an amazing time at the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay this past weekend. I rode leg four with my buddies at Paddlewheel Adventures. Aubrey, Padfoot and I drove out to Haines Junction on Friday night. The 238 km race starts in Haines Junction, Yukon, goes over the Haines Summit, and ends in Haines, Alaska. Recreational teams (like ours) usually have eight riders. More serious teams have four, two or even solo riders.
I finished my 29 km leg in 1 hour 37 minutes. Not bad given the crazy steep grade up into the summit, wild winds and pelting rain. I was lucky to ride my friend Val's speedy road bike.
The best part of the day happened about 20 km into my leg. I passed this woman on a hill and she asked if my name was Michelle. When I said yes, she said "you've got quite a cheering section, don't you?". Let's just say the PWA crew put on a good show. Tons of cheering. I had a blast the entire ride, as you can see by the silly grin on my face. I think I even convinced Aubrey to ride next year.
Of course, there was a great party in Haines when we arrived. And in the end...
